Fall 2000: Bioinformatics Photos Program Directions

In connection with the European Graduate Program ``Combinatorics, Geometry, and Computation'' a

Fall School on Bioinformatics

will be held from November 6 to 11, 2000, in the vicinity of Berlin. The purpose of the Fall School is to give an introductory overview of several areas of Bioinformatics and present new research trends, and to give students working in this or related fields the opportunity to meet.

The school is addressed to advanced undergraduate and graduate students of Mathematics or Computer Science who are interested in the booming field of Bioinformatics. Basic knowledge in algorithmic techniques is assumed. Students of other fields are welcome to apply if they have this prerequisite knowledge.

The program will be presented by the following lecturers:

Ferdinand Hucho, Chris Weise   (Freie Universität Berlin, Fachbereich Biochemie)
Biochemical and molecular foundations of bioinformatics
Daniel Huson   (Celera Genomics Corp., Rockville, Maryland)
    Algorithmic aspects of genome assembly
Jens Stoye   (Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum, Heidelberg)
    Analysis of completely sequenced genomes
Lorenz Wernisch   (Birkbeck College, London)
    Bioinformatics of gene expression data

The lectures will treat biochemical and biological foundations, genome assembly, sequencing, and molecular docking. Each lecturer will present a lecture of two hours in English. In addition, exercises will be solved in small groups and discussed.

The Fall School will take place in Neuseddin, close to Potsdam and Berlin. The exact address of the conference site is:

Freizeit- und Kongresszentrum Neuseddinland
Pappelallee 11
14554 Neuseddin
Tel.: (033205) 46568

Arrival:    We will meet at the

Institute of Computer Science
Freie Universität Berlin
Takustr. 9
14195 Berlin
room 134 (Küche, first floor)

on Monday, November 6, at 15:30 for coffee and tea. Afterwards (around 16:30) we will go to the site of the Fall School by public transportation. This will take about 1 hour. On Monday November 6, 2000 there are two lectures in the Graduate Program starting at 14:15 in the same building at room 005:

KOLLEGSVORLESUNG
Christian Krattenthaler, Universität Wien
über die Abzählung von Tilings, Plane Partitions, und dergleichen mehr

KOLLOQUIUM
Carola Wenk, Freie Universitaet Berlin
